Saturday 9 a.m. & 11:45 a.m. Free Hockey for Beginners, Ages 4-9

If last weekend’s snowstorm did not convince you that winter is on its way, here is something that will. USA Hockey in conjunction with the National Hockey League is hosting a Try Hockey for Free event for children between the ages of four and nine. One-hour lesson and free loaner equipment included.

There is no charge, but you must register in advance

Saturday 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Blacksmith Workshop

Master blacksmith Bill Fitzgerald, of By Hammer, By Hand in Mahopac will give a workshop on how to shape iron into decorative and useful items, using a coal forge, an anvil and other specialized tools.

The fee is $85 and pre-registration is required.

Sunday 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Farmers Market

Fresh produce, meat, cheese, soap and candles, honey, maple syrup, flowers, fish and baked goods, all from local growers, producers and artisans. The weekly market will be closing at the end of November, so take advantage of it while you can.

Saturday & Sunday 11 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. The Nightmare Before Christmas

Lasdon is holding over its Halloween Hair Raiser to the to the first weekend of November. “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” features a haunted house (the main house at Lasdon) with Lionel trains chugging in and out and around, going from Halloween Town to Christmas Town via the Polar Express. 

In the main dining room visitors can view the towns and meet the Pumpkin King, along with some other scary characters. Kids can play train engineer at a special layout specifically for youngsters. If your kids missed trick-or-treat night, this is a great way to make amends.

Tickets: Adults $5, children 2-12 $2. All proceeds will benefit Lasdon’s Glass House Conservatory Fund.
