Westport Teens Take Action for Japan

Staples High School freshmen Rachel Paul, Alice McDonald and Jennifer Mastrianni are on a mission to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan on March 11.

Together, these three friends — who were recently interviewed by CNN — have created a fundraising project called aidJapan2011. They are looking to raise funds for the Japanese Red Cross through a series of ongoing bake sales. Their first bake sale is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday outside Peoples United Bank at 1790 Post Road E. near Stop & Shop.

Alice, who's half Japanese, recently moved to Westport from Japan and still has many friends and family members living there. After the earthquake, she, Rachel and Jennifer "knew that they had to do something," their website says. Beyond this project, the girls hope to start a natural disaster relief club at Staples to help other countries in the future when natural disasters strike.

If you can't make the bake sale in person but would like to help, send a check to Harry Sakamaki, 140 Field Point Rd. #8, Greenwich, CT 06830. Checks should be made payable to the Japan Society of Fairfield County Inc. and marked for Earthquake relief. All donations are tax-deductible and donors will receive tax-exempt receipts.
