Himes Calls for Weiner To Step Down

The explicit photographs and text messages of Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) that have recently gone public are not just a distraction to the public, but also to the House of Representatives, Congressman Jim Himes (D-Conn.) said in a press release. He said Weiner should resign his House seat.

“While millions of Americans go without work, families throughout the country fear foreclosures, and our nation faces a fiscal crisis, we cannot afford the continued distraction of this sorry situation,” Himes said in the release. “I hope Mr. Weiner will choose to step down so Congress can put this matter to rest and so that he can focus on his personal situation.”

Himes also cut ties with Weiner by announcing that he will donate the $2,000 the New York Congressman gave to his election campaigns to the Yerwood Center in Stamford. Weiner gave Himes $1,000 in both 2008 and 2010.

The New York Daily News reports that people close to Weiner say the congressman is considering stepping down.
