Senior Legion State Tourney Kicks off Tuesday

Four Senior Legion baseball teams from Fairfield County--Greenwich, Norwalk, Trumbull and Stamford-- have won the required 15 games and are headed to the state tournament.

Unlike last season, when it took all 27 games to decide a division winner, Greenwich cruised to a 23-4 record and its second straight Zone 4 title. Managed by Mike Abate, the Cannons are seeded fifth in the state tournament and do not have to play until the third round, having earned byes for the first two rounds. Greenwich's first game is tenatively scheduled for Saturday.

Norwalk (20-7) earned the tournament's 10 seed, having finished in second in the Zone. After struggling to get its 15th win, Norwalk finished the regular season on a hot streak, winning its final six games. Managed by Chris Brown, Norwalk Post 12 will host the winner of Ellington vs. Waterford on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Stamford (15-12) had a wild final 10 games, needing to win six of them to qualify for the state tournament. Stamford won exactly six, clinching a berth last Thursday against Westport. Managed by Kevin Murray, Stamford Post 3 enters the tournament as the 30 seed and will make the long drive to Enfield on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game.

Trumbull (18-9) finished third in the Zone and will host Newington Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Trumbull High School.
