Danbury Native Takes Over Fire Marshal's Office

DANBURY, Conn. - Danbury native James Russell was appointed to be the new Fire Marshal for the city in a ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.

Russell began his career in the fire service as a Volunteer Firefighter with the Independent Hose Company #4 in Danbury.  His career with the Danbury Fire Department came later in life, he joined the Department at the age of 45, in 2001. Prior to joining the Department, Russell worked with Connecticut Light and Power and Yankee Gas.  During part of his time there, he served as Enterprise Manager; responsible for the management of a 20-person staff. He has an Associate’s Degree in Fire Technology and an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science & Business Management. In August 2008, Russell was promoted to Fire Inspector and then to Deputy Fire Marshal in April 2009.  He is a certified Fire Officer 1, and certified as a Connecticut Fire Service Instructor.   He is also an EMT, and has received numerous awards and commendations including being named as Firefighter of the Year by the Exchange Club of Danbury. He grew up in Danbury attending Danbury Schools where he excelled in sports, especially baseball and racquetball. He has been a Little League Coach, a House Captain for AmeriCares, and on the National Ski Patrol. 

Russell now resides in New Milford with his wife Kathy and their two sons Jay and Sean.
