Yonkers Police Issue Alert About Suspects Posing As Water Dept. Employees

YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers Police have issued an alert about recent reports of men entering or attempting to enter residences by posing as City of Yonkers Water Department (DPW) employees.

One to four suspects will typically target a home occupied by elderly residents, police said. The men state they have to come inside because of a water problem in the area, either a foul odor in the water or to check pipes in the basement, according to police.

After entering,  the homeowner is distracted or asked to turn the water on and off repeatedly while the suspect or suspects proceed to the basement as items are removed from inside of the home and the suspects flee the scene, police said.

The suspects have been described as white or Hispanic.

Two such incidents occurred near Teresa Avenue and Maple Place and another at Monroe Place.

Anyone with information should call the Yonkers Police at 914-377-7724.

City of Yonkers DPW Water Department employees carry ID cards that are displayed on their outermost garments. Meter reading or the installation of a new water meter will only be done by appointment.
