Four applicants submitted applications and information to the board and spoke briefly about themselves at the start of the meeting. Montero was the only candidate nominated by the board, and was unanimously voted into the seat.

“I want to serve as a trustee for the Yorktown Board of Education because I am passionate when it comes to children, improving education services, making decisions, sometimes tough decisions, and being part of the team of dedicated professionals continuously reviewing our educational practices and policies to enhance student achievement, staff, other programs and initiatives,” Montero said.

Montero has worked in the same district for 20 years, and also holds a bachelors degree in business management. She said that acts as an asset to give her guidance to make fiscally challenging, yet sound decisions, especially when it comes to education.

“I was told from a very young age, always imagine it's for your child when a teacher is in front of the classroom, is that the teacher that you want teaching your children—and if you are making decisions for what’s in the best interest of a child, you can never go wrong,” she said.

Montero will serve on the Board of Education until the next board election, which is May 15, 2012.
