After School Programs Offer Fun for Hastings Kids

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – With classes once again underway in Hastings the vast schedule of after-school programs for students has also returned.

The Hastings Recreation Department will be offering after school programs starting Oct. 11. Classes are held at the Hillside Elementary School, but residents are required to enter into a lottery to sign up for the classes due to high demand.

"It gives each person a time slot so they can come in at that time," said Recreation Supervisor Kendra Garrison.

Each lottery number is for a single family and registration begins Thursday at 5 p.m. Garrison said there have been more than 100 numbers handed out already, which is why the lottery process is nothing new.

"I've been here 10 years so it's got to be longer than that at least," she said.

Classes are offered in a number of disciplines including Asian cooking, chess, scrapbooking, Legos, sports, sculpture, robotics and more. Classes will be held at Hillside from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on various school days.

"Our most popular one tends to be the food ones like the One Bite Delight," Garrison said. "Our robotics class will probably fill up this time around and Legos are popular."

Classes run once a week for eight weeks and Garrison said there is a mixture of college students, parents and staff members teaching the programs. Garrison encouraged parents to sign their kids up for Hillside after school programs because they are a way for students to socialize outside of the classrooms.

"It gives their kids something to do after school," she said. "They can hang out with their friends and do something fun."
