Katonah Library to Host Acclaimed Poet on Sunday

KATONAH, NY-- This weekend, the Katonah Village Library will continue the tradition of bringing well-known poets through its doors.

Booked by the Katonah Poetry Series, acclaimed poet Aimee Nezhukumatathil will be gracing listener’s ears on Sunday. The program is a product of the library itself and is led by advisors Billy Collins, the former United States Poet Laureate, and Katonah resident Dr. Leisha Douglas.

Rebecca Rogan is the president of the series’ planning committee, and she knows that locals will find themselves highly entertained with Nezhukumatathil.

“Ms. Nezhukumatathil is an award-winning and gifted poet,” Rogan said. “Having heard her read in the past, I know she’s also a great reader and often funny!”

The poet has written four books, the last of which is titled “Lucky Fish,” which came out this year. While writing is obviously a major passion of hers, Nezhukumatathil (as told to vice president of the Poetry Series, Andy Kuhn) said she relishes reading her work in front of a group.

"I actually do love readings very much—so much of your time as a writer is spent alone in a room,” Nezhukumatathil said, “and readings and workshops are a way to connect and have a conversation with an audience and get out of my own headspace, so to speak.”

Nezhukumatathil, an associate professor of English at SUNY-Fredonia, will be reading at 4 p.m. on Sunday in the Garden Room, which is described by Rogan as a “quiet and intimate space for visiting poets for the last 45 years.”

Next on the docket for the Poetry Series is Matthea Harvey, who is scheduled to appear in Katonah on November 13.
