POUND RIDGE, N.Y. Pound Ridge senior citizens are getting a new set of wheels.
The Pound Ridge Town Board approved a bond for $48,479 at its meeting last week to purchase a new bus for the Recreation Departments Neighbor to Neighbor program. The bus is used for a variety of senior events, from grocery shopping trips to field trips to museums and other attractions.
The current bus was leased from the county five years ago with 77,000 miles on it for a dollar a year. When the lease program ended, the town was able to buy it for a dollar a year. The vehicle now has more than 100,000 miles on its odometer.
The roof leaks and it rocks and rattles, Recreation Supervisor David Goldberg. It looks like its in good shape as long as youre not driving it.
The new bus is being purchased from Don Brown Bus Sales in Johnstown, N.Y. The $48,479 price tag is a state bid price that comes through the Office of General Services (OGS) Procurement Services Group. The state puts out the bids on behalf of its municipalities.
If you were to buy a bus like this on your own, it would cost around $68,000, Goldberg said. The state gets a discount.
Goldberg said the town could receive its new bus as early as the end of January.
We have to work out the particulars, he said. They have to prep it and then put the lettering on it. We have to figure out what the lettering will say Town of Pound Ridge, Neighbor to Neighbor, Pound Ridge Recreation werent not sure yet.
The new bus will seat 14 passengers or 12 passengers with two wheelchairs spots. It comes complete with a wheelchair lift.
The old bus will be donated to the fire department to be used in drills.
We have a great Neighbor to Neighbor program and this one way to support it, said Town Supervisor Gary Warshauer.
