Putnam Valley HS Students' Play Chosen For Festival

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. – In September, two Putnam Valley High School students, ninth-grader Owen Gifford-Smith and 11th-grader Jadyn Marshall, co-wrote a one-act play, “To Meet You.”

They submitted the play to Writopia Lab’s Worldwide Plays Festival, and were among those chosen to have their play produced off-Broadway in the showcase season. The play focuses on disabilities, specifically those unseen, and the people who help others step beyond figurative and literal doors to face the world.

Writopia Lab’s Worldwide Plays Festival is an annual festival of plays written by playwrights ages 6 to 18 and produced, directed, and acted by New York theater professionals. Writopia Lab's Worldwide Plays Festival is now in its fifth year, and is open to more writers than ever before. The festival includes plays written in workshops at Writopia’s labs across the country and plays submitted to our competition from playwrights around the world. Works produced include comedies, musicals, monologues, historical dramas, tear jerkers, and thought pieces — all written by playwrights not yet old enough to vote.

The production of "To Meet You" will be produced at The Barrow Group Theatre in New York City on Nov. 16, 2014.

Marshall and Gifford-Smith thanked the Putnam Valley Central School District for their support in helping them to promote such a wonderful experience. They noted they are grateful for the support the district gives to literary and artistic pursuits, and said they hope that they can set a precedent for rising students.
