The 65-foot-tall tree, a focal point for the city's holiday celebrations, was blown over by high winds on Sunday, Nov. 15.
Each year, New Haven prides itself on choosing the most beautiful tree for the city’s Green. This year’s tree, a Norway Spruce Evergreen, came from Budding Ridge Road in Cheshire. The tree has come to symbolize community, hope, and heart - as well as commercialism.
No one was injured when the tree fell over, but it does not seem like it is going back up. On Tuesday, Nov. 17, Eye Witness News 3 reported the tree had been damaged beyond repair.
It is unclear if there will be a replacement.
In a bit of foreshadowing, the Gangi’s, who live adjacent to the Green told NBC Connecticut earlier this month that they were worried about the tree falling down since the weather has been so crazy this year.
“It was either this might land on my house someday, land in the road or make a big mess,” James Gangi said. “I thought this is probably the best way for this tree to go out is in style.”
Many people online are pointing out that the New Haven Christmas tree falling over is fitting for 2020 - a year ridiculed for how many terrible things have happened including a worldwide pandemic that closed the economy, out-of-control wildfires, widespread unrest, and protests in the U.S., and divisive politics.
