New Canaan Woman Charged After Leaving Kids in SUV

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – A Park Street woman accused of leaving her children in her vehicle with the engine running is facing a pair of child neglect charges.

Police said Alison Ball, 31, left her 2003 Ford Excursion’s engine running while she went inside the Food Emporium supermarket off Elm Street last Thursday. Police received a complaint at 2:26 p.m. about children left inside a locked vehicle.

Police arrived four minutes later and found Ball’s 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter in the Excursion. An officer asked the boy to open the door. After initially saying no, the boy rolled down the window, which allowed the officer to remove the key and shut off the engine. Ball returned between 2:40 and 2:45 p.m. and told police she kept left the car running to power the air-conditioning and DVD player.

Ball is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court at a later date.
