EASTCHESTER, N.Y. Board of Education members got one of their first glimpses of a proposed addition to the middle and high schools Tuesday night.
The attached buildings, located on White Plains Road, will be too small for students when the current class of second graders reaches sixth grade.
Architect Russell Davidson of Kaeyer, Garment & Davidson of Mt. Kisco said based on projected enrollments, his company has come up with two proposed additions. One proposal would wrap around the gym and the other replaces the current two-story cafeteria with a four-story addition.
Davidson told the board at its monthly meeting that there are already 181 more students than can comfortably fit at Eastchester Middle School.
"With the projected enrollment, that number will soar to 275 students by 2014," he said.
The proposed addition to the middle school would add 12 general classrooms and five science rooms and would be situated at the back of the building.
Under the current proposal, the high school would get 12 new general classrooms and four science rooms. According to Davidson, there are 107 more students than can be accommodated at the high school currently. By 2014 that number will go up to 178.
Trustee Peter Doyle asked Davidson how long the addition will be able to accommodate the schools ever-increasing enrollment."It gets you through to the foreseeable future, meaning about 10 to 11 years," Davidson said.
Davidson said the next step is to meet with the principals of each building and go over their needs. With that information, Davidson said he could put together a more specific proposal for the additions and a detailed budget.
Those numbers and additional details on the project will be presented to the Board at its July 11 meeting.
