Cause Of Norwalk River Oil Spill In Wilton Still Undetermined

WILTON, Conn. -- The cause of an oil spill that dumped between 50 to 75 gallons of oil in to the Norwalk River in Wilton, Ridgefield and Redding last week is still undetermined, according to the Wilton Bulletin.

The source of the spill was a leaking 200-gallon underground heating oil tank behind a building on Ethan Allen Highway in Ridgefield, the Wilton Bulletin reported. Oil slicks were reported across the area, causing emergency responders from throughout the area to be called to work the different sites, said the Wilton Bulletin.

To help stem the flow of oil and soak up what had leaked, firefighters used special pads and booms designed to absorb oil. Officials with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection told the Wilton Bulletin that the quick response helped minimize any long-term damage. A remediation crew pumped the remaining oil from the tank and cleaned out the tank's basin, reported the Wilton Bulletin.
