SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- If you feel like laughing about this year's political season, head to Purpl in Hastings where Scott Blakeman will host "Unconventionally Funny," an evening of political comedy on Saturday, July 30 at 8 p.m.
The Scarsdale resident, who served as resident comedian on MSNBC's live coverage of the 2016 White House Correspondents Dinner, will be joined by Nancy Giles from CBS "Sunday Morning" and David Feldman from "Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Election Special 2016." (Go HERE for ticket information.)
Blakeman, who was profiled in an earlier Daily Voice story , said "it used to be that politicians were serious people and comedians were the crazy ones who made fun of them. Now we're the sane ones trying to make sense of the craziness."
Blakeman is known locally for his classes and comic workshops. Jon Stewart was one of his first students back in 1987 and Caroline Rhea, from "Sabrina" took the workshop in 1989.
Most recently, he mentored 16-year-old Simon Cadel from Tarrytown, who recently performed as Dangerfield's youngest comic .
Blakeman said his classes are "for anyone who wants to use comedy in their personal and professional lives, whether or not they have dreams of comedic stardom."
For those Lenny Bruce fans Blakeman will also be producing and hosting "Lenny Bruce: How To Talk Dirty and Influence People" on Wednesday, August 3 at 7 p.m. at the New York Society for Ethical Culture in New York City.
The evening will feature rarely screened footage of Lenny Bruce performances, and the classic short film "Thank You Masked Man". Following the screening, Blakeman, will lead a panel discussion with Kliph Nesteroff, author of "The Comedians," Anne Klaeysen, a leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture, and other luminaries from the worlds of entertainment and the media.
One hundred percent of the net proceeds will go to The Lenny Bruce Memorial Foundation, which provides scholarships and support with educational tools, skills and ongoing encouragement designed to fulfill a path of recovery and sobriety for men and women who suffer from alcohol and drug abuse issues.
