"Increasing Self-Control and Resilience In Our Lives and the Lives of Our Children," by Baruch-Feldman will be on Friday, March 6 at 12:30 p.m.

Walter Mischel’s famous marshmallow test is getting a lot of buzz these days. His new book, “The Marshmallow Test,” describes an association he found between preschoolers who could resist a marshmallow at age four and many positive outcomes later on. Fortunately, having self-control is not a “fixed trait,” but rather one that can be taught. Find out how to create a growth mindset, develop grittiness, and increase self-control.

Participants are encouraged to read all or some of the books and articles that will be the basis of the lecture, and to listen to the TED Talk by Angela Duckworth, although it is not mandatory. These are the books and links to the TED Talk and articles are:

  • "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success," by Carol Dweck
  • "The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self-Control," by Walter Mischel
  • "How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiousity, and the Hidden Power of Character," by Paul Tough
  • Ted Talk: Angela Duckworth, "The Key to Success: Grit?"
  • "Got Grit? Got Marshmallows? Increasing Self-Control and Resilience in the Lives of Our Children: Part 1," and
  • "Got Grit? Got Growth? Got Marshmallows? Strategies To Increase Self-Control and Resilience in the Lives of Our Children: Part 2," by Baruch-Feldman

It is encouraged, but not required, to attend all three workshops. When you register, it is for this first workshop only. Registration for the next workshop will open when the previous workshop is over. Workshop 3, "Helping Decrease Stress and Worry In Our Children and Our Own Lives," will be on Friday, May 1 at 12 p.m. Visit http://calendar.scarsdalelibrary.org/event.php?id=894795 to register.
