Teams of up to three participants will compete against one another in the Friends of the Scarsdale Public Library Spelling Bee, with the victorious squad members each claiming a set of Bose headphones as a grand prize for their spelling acumen.
Several teams have already registered for the 2016 Bee, with registration set to close to the public on Thursday, Dec. 31. Interested teams can register, using the library’s team sign-up form. The actual event will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5 in the Scarsdale High School auditorium.
There is a $150 fee per team, with proceeds from the event helping to benefit the library. Scarsdale residency is not required. In the event of inclement weather, there will be a snow date on Friday, Feb. 26.
The Bee will be conducted in two rounds. In the first, teams will spell words on a dry erase boards, with team members collaborating amongst themselves before reaching a consensus. The second, which will represent the semifinals, when there is no more than four teams remaining, will be a verbal competition.
In addition to the entertaining spelling bee, there will be moments of audience participation, raffles, prizes, refreshments and a silent auction for those in attendance at the high school.
Susan Groner, a returning competitor that has participated in many Bees, said that the night makes for a good night of fun for participants and observers alike.
"The Spelling bee is lots of fun for teams, and the audience who can play along to test their own spelling skills," she said. "The competition is really very impressive."
