One of the Friends’ most popular fundraising events, teams of all age groups will challenge each other for spelling supremacy at the high school, while spectators place bids on hundreds of dollars of silent auction items.
Once again emceed by Ed Coleman, more commonly referred to as the “voice of the New York Mets,” doors will open for the event at 7 p.m., with the actual spelling bee kicking off a half hour later in the auditorium. There will be a $5 admission fee.
There will be an all-star list of teams, including several featuring library personnel – as well as last year’s winners, the Library TrustBees, who won on the word “mischievous” - Thomas Hagerman, the new Scarsdale schools’ superintendent and other school and village officials. Assemblywoman Amy Paulin is among the panel of judges that will moderate the competition.
In addition to the spelling bee, there will be refreshments, trivia and other entertainment for the audience in between rounds.
Proceeds from the event will be used to pay for a series of speakers at the library. “Diamond” sponsors to this year’s spelling bee include Mercedez Benz of White Plains and Richard and Sara Werder.
