WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – An informational program on breast health will be offered for Ashkenazi Jewish women in June.
“Know Our Genes: First Annual Symposium on Breast Health for Ashkenazi Jewish Women will be held on Sunday, June 8 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at Temple Israel Center, 280 Old Mamaroneck Road.
White Plains Hospital partnered with Temple Israel Center of White Plains and local schools, synagogues and Jewish organizations in Westchester to offer the informational health program.
Dan Costin, M.D., F.A.C.P, Co-Medical Director of the White Plains Hospital Cancer Program and Nancy Parkes, Education Director of Temple Israel Center, intend for the program to inform Ashkenazi Jewish women about being proactive with their breast health in the form of genetic knowledge, screenings, risk factors and prevention.
According to the National Cancer Institute, one in 40 women of Ashkenazi Jewish descent are found to have either BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with featured presentations starting at 9:00 a.m. Lecture topics include Myths and Facts about Breast Cancer; Cancer Risk in Jews: Why Us?; The Genetic Counseling Session; Breast Cancer Screening in High Risk Women; and Why I Got Tested for BRCA.
Nationally recognized medical leaders in the field will be presenting the lectures.
