The Pineapple Classic is a fun, Hawaiian-themed 5K run with obstacles throughout the course. There is a post-race luau with a beer garden, food and entertainment.  Various vendors will be on-site to share samples with participants and spectators. Clowns, face painters and a kids area will keep the younger ones entertained.

Participants compete for speed and for the best costume. Participants are asked to raise funds to help LLS advance lifesaving cancer research and patient services. LLS hopes to raise over $200,000 during the event.

The day will celebrate the memory of Kyle Markes, the chapter’s honored hero. Kyle was diagnosed with leukemia in the fall of 2012, and lost his battle on Dec. 24, 2013. He was a beloved fifth-grader at New Canaan Country School who loved sports, music and dancing.   In 2013, Kyle and his family put together the team Kyle’s Corner for LLS’ Pineapple Classic. They had over 150 participants on their team and raised over $16,000. This year, Kyle’s mom, Jackque, has formed the team once again to honor and remember her son.

New for the event this year is Stamford’s own Dinosaur Bar-B-Que. Participants will enjoy pulled pork, coleslaw and potato salad.

Also new to the day’s lineup is local band Doghouse. The band is composed of a CFO, an oncologist, a college professor, a hedge fund COO, a former member of Joe Cocker’s band and a triple threat singer/songwriter/guitarist.

Whole Foods Market Greenwich donated pineapples for the event.

Anyone ages 8 and older can participate. Register online or the day of the event. For questions, call 665-1400; to register go to www.pineappleclassic5k.org/ct.
