SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Despite early morning showers and a formidable storm on the way, Scarsdale residents got in a pleasant day of shopping under the sun at the Chamber of Commerce’s annual Sidewalk Sale.
The day started off damp, but things quickly improved, with the sun shining until mid-afternoon. Shoppers browsed the wares with the sun on their backs until the sale came to a close at 6 p.m. – and threatening storm clouds took over.
“Today the rains came out, but once the sun was up people flocked out to the sales,” Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce member Lewis Arlt said. “This is a very popular event. We expect people to flock the rest of the way.”
Thirty retailers, all chamber members, participated in the sale, lining the downtown streets with merchandise. Goods ranged from jewelry and clothing to kitchen equipment and hamburgers. Music played in the center of the village while shoppers of all ages looked at sale items.
“We come every year, we look forward to it,” one shopper said. “It brings a lot of people out and into the village.”
Arlt was unsure how long the sidewalk sale has been a fixture in Scarsdale, but he estimated it was between 35 and 50 years. The event will continue through Saturday, with sales from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“There doesn’t seem to be a favorite shop from year to year,” Arlt said. “We’ve been here forever. They seem to spread their wares everywhere, and all the stores do very well.”
