Westchester Communities Remember 9/11 With Memorials, Events

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- As it has for the past 14 years, a host of Westchester communities will honor Sept. 11 in their own way.

It is also the National Day of Service and Remembrance and Volunteer New York! offers a range of opportunities to get involved Sept. 11-13 including a daylong event Sept. 11 at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. Register on their webshite here

Below is a sampling of events taking place across the county Friday, Sept. 11. Feel free to add any we've missed to our comments.

Cortlandt: Cortlandt, along with the Villages of Buchanan and Croton-on-Hudson, will dedicate a memorial at 4 p.m. at Croton Landing.

Participants will gather in the Croton Landing parking area at the north end of Elliott Way of the Croton RiverWalk at 3:30 p.m. for the ceremony at 4 pm. 

Croton Falls: A remembrance ceremony will be held at the firehouse in North Salem, 301 Titicus Road, at 6:30 p.m. and include clergy from local churches, high school bands and choruses, Boy Scouts, American Legions, Ladies Auxillary, speeches, and music, along with refreshments.

Mount Kisco: The Mount Kisco Volunteer Fire Department invites residents to join them for a memorial service starting at 6:15 p.m. at 100 Main St. Following a brief ceremony people are invited to the Mutual Firehouse for light refreshments.

New Castle: The annual 9/11 Memorial will be held at Gedney Park, located off Route 133 east of downtown Millwood.

New Rochelle: Habitat for Humanity of Westchester will host its annual 9/11 build-a-thon in honor of those who died during the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. Those interested should e-mail relief@habitat.org.

Rye: Volunteers at Village Green will make thank you cards to attach to Rice Krispie treats and give to local first responders from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.

A commemorative ceremony will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. beginning at the Fire House on Locust Avenue.

Pound Ridge: There will be a service at 10 a.m. at Sachs Park as part of an annual 9/11 memorial service.

Valhalla: Candlelighting ceremony at 7 p.m at "The Rising" at Kensico Dam will remember the 111 Westchester residents and 12 former residents who lost their lives. 

White Plains: The Recreation and Parks Department will hold a remembrance service at 8 a.m. at Liberty Park on Lake Street complete with music, wreath laying, prayer, poem reading and tree planting. 

The city will also fly six American flags from City Hall in honor of the six White Plains residents who lost their lives.

Yonkers: Mayor Mike Spano, along with other city officials and families of 9/11 victims will take part in two ceremonies: at 8:30 a.m. at the Yonkers 9/11 Waterfront Memorial on Water Grant Street, and at 7 p.m. at the Monument in Conor Park, on McLean and Central Park avenues.

Policemen, firemen and emergency medical technicians are also invited to a free barbeque buffet lunch at the Empire Terrace Restaurant of the Empire City Casino from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call (914) 968-4200 or visit www.EmpireCityCasino.com for more information.
