The program is open to people living with breast, ovarian and gynecological cancers.

Lymphedema is a swelling of a part of the body caused by the buildup of lymph fluids. It often happens in the arm, leg, face or neck. It can be caused by cancer or its treatment. In this program, speakers will discuss the latest information on lymphedema and look at various resources available for managing the condition.

Speakers for the event include Jen Looby, MS, PT, CLT and Ann Mowry, who is co-owner of Specialty Fittings, located in Ginger’s Place at NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital.

Looby is a physical therapist/senior lymphedema therapist at NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital. She received her certification in lymphedema therapy from Norton School of Lymphatics. She has also studied head and neck lymphedema and axillary web syndrome.

Some topics of discussion that Looby will discuss include: What is lymphedema and what causes it; incidence of lymphedema after breast and ovarian cancer; recommendations for surveillance and risk reduction for people at risk for developing breast cancer related lymphedema, as well as those already diagnosed with lymphedema; techniques for management of complete decongestive therapy, bandages, garments; and causes and treatments for axillary syndrome.

Mowry and her partner Diane Surman are certified mastectomy fitters and compression garment fitters. They are also trained patient navigators, having trained at the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute. Mowry will share the resources available for lymphedema and post-mastectomy management, such as sleeves, compression garments, bras and post-mastectomy products.
