The legendary band played the historic theater 18 times in 1970 and 1971 and was well-known as one of front man Jerry Garcia’s favorite venues. The unreleased concert was from the band’s final show at the Capitol on Feb. 24, 1971.
The show was mixed from the original 16-track analog master tapes recorded at the Capitol for the "Skull & Roses" album, though none of the songs were included in the album’s pressing.
“It’s no secret that the Grateful Dead loved playing at the Capitol Theatre,” said the band’s archivist David Lemieux, in a release. The concert features “Bertha,” “Loser,” “Greatest Story Ever Told,” “Playing In The Band,” “Deal,” and “Bird Song.” In addition, versions of “Good Lovin’,” and “Lovelight,” clock in at nearly 20 minutes each.
Following the concert Saturday, the theater will play a “Greatest Unreleased Mixtape” assembled by Lemieux, of the vault’s master tapes and a recently discovered batch of tapes from 1969-70.
Admission to “A Dose Of The Dead: 2/24/71,” is $8 in advance and $10 on the day of the show. The event is for those 18 and over. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m. To purchase tickets, visit The Capitol Theatre website.
The Capitol Theatre is at 149 Westchester Ave., Port Chester.
