New Rochelle Arts Commission Announces New Mural For Dollar Tree Facade

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – On Tuesday, February 9, the City of New Rochelle will host an artists’ reception at City Hall to showcase the entries and celebrate the winner of the 2016 Dollar Tree Mural Competition. The competition was launched in late 2015 by Municipal Arts Commission of New Rochelle and the Dollar Store, located at 435 North Ave., in an effort to showcase local artists in the community.

Of the 26 entries submitted, only one was chosen to adorn the side of the Dollar Tree store on North Avenue. The winning mural is entitled 'A Day in the Ro' and was painted by Aston LeMelle-Thomas, a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in 2013.

"My piece aims to show the incredible creative energy, organic landscapes, and loving community that make our city so impressive," said LeMelle-Thomas. "Much like New Rochelle’s diversity, this piece too is a melting pot. It has elements of pencil, ink, photoshop, collage, and photography. Conceptually, the origins of this piece came easily — I wanted to depict my friends, family, icons and teachers that helped shape me over the years and imagine them in different scenes around the city."

The mural includes several familiar New Rochelle scenes, including the Long Island Sound, New Rochelle High School, Glenn Island, Downtown New Rochelle and New Roc.

The reception will be held at Feb.9 at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Rotunda. For more information, click here.
