Volunteer New York! marked its beginnings at the White Plains YMCA, the organization's birthplace, on Feb. 11, with a media event that capped off a few hours of celebration.

Earlier that day, 65 specialty cupcakes from Lulu’s Cake Boutique were delivered around the area, along with a keepsake from Balancing Life Issues, to virtual guests who shared the hashtag #VNY65.

A few of the virtual guests were Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Iron Chef Peter Kelly of Yonkers’ X20, New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson and Mary Calvi of the CBS "News This Morning."

At the press event, Deputy County Executive Kevin Plunkett presented Volunteer New York! board chair Mark Rollins with a proclamation from Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino. Also in the crowd were: White Plains Mayor Tom Roach; Cynthia Rubino, CEO of YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester; Paul Schwarz, the son of Volunteer New York!’s co-founder Jane Schwarz; and state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins.

“We hope this celebration has just begun to raise further awareness about what we do and the types of connections we make to strengthen our community,” said Volunteer New York! executive director Alisa H. Kesten.
