SCARSDALE, N.Y. – In recognition of National Diabetes Month, Scarsdale Medical Group is reminding people with diabetes to make annual foot exams part of their health care routine.

People with diabetes are prone to developing foot problems, such as athlete’s foot and infected calluses. They also can suffer from poor circulation, or neuropathy, which can cause symptoms varying from pain to a lack of sensation.

According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 20 million Americans have diabetes, and about 60 to 70 percent of those have mild to severe forms of neuropathy.

“It’s imperative for individuals with diabetes to maintain proper care of their feet,” said Scarsdale Medical Group podiatrist Victor Marks. “Early diagnosis and treatment of foot problems related to diabetes is crucial to best manage any problems.”

Scarsdale Medical Group, a multi-specialty practice serving Westchester County and the surrounding Hudson Valley area, recommends at least an annual foot exam to check for altered sensation, decreased circulation and/or infection.

For people with diabetic neuropathy, it recommends inspecting your feet daily (especially the soles – if necessary with a mirror) and looking for cuts, blisters, sores, signs of infection or changes in color or skin temperature.
