SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Some of southern Westchester’s youngest and brightest math students are set to show off their skills at the annual “TriMathlon” at the Mathnasium of Scarsdale.

The contest will take place at Scarsdale's Mathnasium, which is located at 747 White Plains Road, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Now in its sixth iteration, officials are gearing up for the biggest TriMathlon yet, with “TriMathletes” in grades two through five competing against each other for medals and to raise money for their school districts.

“Mathnasium’s TriMathlon contest is designed to encourage kids to engage in math and to support local schools,” Director Shane Bland stated. “Children at all levels of math ability are invited to participate. In addition to winning medals, all students who participate this year will earn money for local schools with a donation for each student participating in the event.”

The TriMathlon consists of three events, which includes Magic Squares, where students develop their own math problems and the Counting Game, which tests students’ ability to count from and to any number, by any number. The last event is the Mental Math Workout, which challenges participants to solve problems without a pencil and paper to demonstrate their “number sense.”

Second- and third-grade students will compete against one another in one division, while the fourth and fifth-graders will square off in the other. Participants from around the country will compete in similar TriMathlons with the goal of raising $40,000.

Top scorers will be invited to be held at the National Grand Prize TriMathlon, which will be held at the winner’s local Mathnasium center the following weekend.

Students need not be enrolled in a Mathnasium center to participate in the free event. Interested parties can now register online, or by contacting Scarsdale Center Director Shane Bland at (914) 725-6284 or scarsdale@mathnasium.com.

“Mathnasium’s TriMathlon provides a wonderful opportunity for kids to engage in math in a fun way that also gives back to the community,” Kevin Carnes, President of Lakeshore’s Education Division, said. “We’re proud to support this event and inspire more kids to develop a love for math.”
