Scarsdale: Will Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow Groundhog Day?

Cloudy skies on Tuesday in western Pennsylvania are likely to prevent groundhog Punxsutawney Phil from seeing his shadow and return to his burrow, according to a report in USA Today.

Spring's early or late arrival may or may not hinge on what the groundhog does Feb. 2.

According to the legend, if groundhog Phil does see his shadow, he'll be frightened and rush back into his burrow, signaling that the United States will be in for six more weeks of winter. But, if he fails to see his shadow, the country is in for warmer weather and an early spring, according to USA Today.

According to weather information in the past, there is "no predictive skill for the groundhog during the most recent years of the analysis," a National Centers for Environmental Information report says, USA Today said.

The groundhog was "right" 13 times and "wrong" 15 times, since 1988, according to USA Today.
