For Scarsdale Doctors, Medicine Is A Family Business

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- For one Westchester family, medicine has become the "family business."

Rather than discouraging his sons -- Kaare and Philip -- from following in the footsteps of his busy, demanding profession, Purchase resident Dr. Carl Weber, a general surgeon, inspired them to become surgeons, too.

About 10 years ago, Philip joined his father at White Plains Hospital’s surgical practice. In 2011, Kaare left Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City to join his brother and father in White Plains. (See him discuss his move in this video; a link to a video chat with Philip is here.)

By his own actions and words, Dr. Carl Weber showed his sons that the patient-physician relationship remains at the heart of medicine.

“My father’s dedication to his work has always come from a true passion for what he does," said Scarsdale resident Dr. Kaare Weber.  "By his example as a dedicated surgeon and a passionate advocate for patient care, he has taught us -- and generations of young men and women -- to always strive for the best and to do so with compassion and humanity.”

Like their father, the younger Webers learned to become leaders. Carl, the patriarch, is former president of the medical staff, former chief of surgery and former board member at White Plains Hospital.

Philip, a gastrointestinal surgeon who lives in Ardsley, is director of minimally invasive surgery, robotics and bariatrics at the hospital.

Kaare, an endocrine surgeon, is director of surgery at the hospital.

Both father and sons view surgery as a last resort. “Surgery is a debilitating disease. If you can avoid it, you should," said Dr. Kaare.

The Webers -- Carl is married to Dr. Joan  Weber, assistant superintendent of the Scarsdale Union Free School District -- .have five grown children, though three didn't pursue medical careers. However, there is a fourth "Dr. Weber" at White Plains Hospital: Kaare’s wife, Pamela, a radiologist, serves as the hospital’s director of outpatient imaging at a satellite medical office in New Rochelle.
