Seven years later, Evan Greenberg’s hot cocoa stand has evolved into an annual charity event in Scarsdale, with all proceeds going to benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
After building his stand, creating invitations for neighbors and having classmates sign up to assist him, Greenberg – who has since been joined by younger brother Joshua – stocked it with some powdered cocoa mix and homemade baked good. The brothers set up shop in the family garage and earned a few hundred dollars that was donated to the hunger project that was run at their elementary school.
The annual event has since caught the attention of the community and county. Hot cocoa is now donated by the Chocolations in Mamaroneck, and raffle items are donated from several Scarsdale stores. Local sports teams have also jumped in the mix, with donations coming from the Yankees, Mets, Giants, Jets, Rangers, Knicks and Devils. Last year’s event raised $3,500 for the Mamaroneck-based Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
This year’s charity hot cocoa event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 9 and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 10 at All Good Things in The Golden Horseshoe shopping center on Wilmot Road at the Scarsdale-New Rochelle line.
Ken Greenberg, Joshua and Evan’s father, said that, not in his wildest dreams, did he and his wife think that the hot cocoa stand could become a village staple.
“I know Elisa and I never imagined that we would have gone from our little hot cocoa stand in our garage to such a big event,” he said. “Knowing that we are giving all our proceeds to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation is the best thing.”
