Dominick DeVito has earned the Youth Sports Coaches Award from the Westchester Recreation and Parks Society, which was officially presented to him this week at the organization’s annual awards and scholarship luncheon.

For the better part of a decade, DeVito has been coaching youths in the Eastchester Instructional Basketball League (EIBL), where he played for eight years until he graduated from Eastchester High School.

According to the nomination letter that was submitted on his behalf by Eastchester Recreation Superintendent Sally Veltidi, DeVito’s “combination of his basketball skills, personality and his ability to relate to the players was a winning combination for both the team and the town.”

Each year, the Westchester Recreation and Parks Society awards enterprising members of the county that attempt to make a difference in their community through sport.

During his tenure coaching with the EIBL, DeVito has shown a knack for problem solving - he instituted a simple way for coaches to know how to substitute players - and a commitment to the league, spending Saturdays in the gym to instruct fellow coaches about how to maximize their players’ potential.

“Eastchester Recreation is very lucky to have Dominick DeVito volunteering his time to help make the Eastchester Instructional Basketball League as successful as it is,” Veltidi wrote in the nomination letter. “He truly is a perfect example of a volunteer who provides unselfish service in youth sports, on behalf of a recreation program.”
