SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Happy Birthday to Scarsdale’s Yoko Ono!
Yoko Ono, a resident of Scarsdale, turns 81 on Tuesday.
Yoko Ono, a Japanese artist and peace activist, known for her work in avant-garde art, music and filmmaking and for her marriage to John Lennon, was born Feb.18, 1933, in Tokyo, Japan.
There have been retrospectives of her work in New York City in 1989 and 2001, in Germany, and the United Kingdom in 2008, and in Germany, Austria and Spain in 2013. She received a Golden Lion Award for lifetime achievement from the Venice Biennale in 2009 and the 2012 Oskar Kokoschka Prize, Austria's highest award for applied contemporary art.
She maintains Lennon's legacy, among other things funding and maintaining Strawberry Fields in Central Park New York City, the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland, and the John Lennon Museum in Saitama, Japan. She has also made significant philanthropic contributions to arts, peace, Philippine disaster relief, and AIDS and autism outreach programs. Since 2003, eleven of her songs, mostly remixes of her older work, have hit No. 1 on the dance charts in the U.S.
