The vivid re-imagining of “Pride and Prejudice” offers deeper insight into Jane Austen's minor characters and their own set of dramas. While the marriage prospects of the Bennett girls preoccupy the family upstairs, downstairs the housekeeper Mrs. Hill has her hands full managing the staff.

Baker takes many surprising risks in developing the relationships between the servants and the Bennetts, but the end result steers clear of gimmick and flourishes as a respectful and moving retelling.

Registration is required at the library’s main desk or by calling 914-722-1300. On Dec. 16, the group will discuss “The Rocks” by Peter Nichols.

The Scarsdale Public Library is at 54 Olmsted Road.
