Scarsdale Adult School Offers 'Walk Live' Sessions In January

SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Seven years ago, while doing her holiday shopping, Heather Buyers came across a book by Leslie Sansone about how to shed extra pounds with an easy to follow daily walking plan.

The tips and easy to follow plans resonated with her mindset as a career project manager. Before long, she had lost 30 pounds and discovered a new passion.

Impressed with the simplicity of the program and the ease of performing the steps indoors, Buyers applied to Sansone's training program, just as it was getting under way. In May of 2009, became one of the first people in the country to become certified as a Walk Leader for the Leslie Sansone Walk Live Workout.

Shortly after that, Buyers was leading her first Walk Live class at Scarsdale Adult School. Because the workout is designed to be indoors, the course is perfect for months when inclement weather deters outdoor exercise. With simplistic moves done on level surfaces, the Walk Live program is also well-suited for those who want to build stamina, even if they have not been active recently or have concerns about negotiating uneven terrain.

Buyers tailors the music to suit the classes' preferences, playing music from the 1950s, 1960s, and beyond. Her students have ranged in age from their 50s to their late 80s. Although some students sign up for class together, Buyers has observed many students renewing old acquaintances as they coincidentally meet each other again in her class. Buyers is proud of the real sense of community that has developed among her students and she is always eager to welcome new ones.

Currently, Buyers is also obtaining a certification in Chi Walking, another fitness program centered on low-impact walking as a means to lifelong health. Once completed, she hopes to teach that program as well.

Buyers next session of Walk Live meets on Mondays from 10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at Greenville Community Church. Classes begin on Jan. 5, 2015.
