Scarsdale residents Matt Cucolo and Ashley Gordon teamed up to travel the globe and battle it out against 10 other teams as they were tested physically, mentally and emotionally in a series of challenges in a race around the world.

This season featured teams that were dating, including the Scarsdale couple, who have been together three years. Gordon said the selection process was a painless one, where she submitted their bio with some photos and 24 hours later they were signed up.

“We really didn’t know what to expect. We are both physically fit, but we knew it wasn’t just about that,” she said. “We are both ‘cross that bridge when we get there,’ type of people, so to say we had any expectations would be a lie.”

Not much is known about the upcoming season, which was filmed between Nov. 12 and Dec. 6 last year, though it begins in Castaic, Calif. and heads to Tokyo. Gordon said the things they got to experience during the show could never be trumped by the $1 million prize that goes to the winner.

“This was one of the most amazing experiences either of us have had in our lives. The things we saw, the things we did and the places we visited, one million dollars couldn’t even buy,” she said. There were so many highs and lows throughout the race. Every minute was a high on the show; we were running off pure adrenaline.”

As they return to their lives as hairdressers in Scarsdale, both Gordon and Cucolo agreed their relationship was positively changed forever by their experience on the show.

“Ashley gave me 100 percent trust during the race, and going into it she thought she was going to struggle with doing so and she didn’t,” he said. “To sum it all up, it was the best thing that could have happened to us, and we thank God every day that we had this amazing opportunity.”

Although they couldn’t divulge too many spoilers about their season, which premieres at 9:30 p.m. on CBS Wednesday night, they emphasized everything the viewers see happened, nothing was scripted.

“It’s the most heart-pounding, intense, satisfying, surreal, driven on pure adrenaline experience that anyone could ever live through,” Cucolo said. “The group of racers that were on this season were some of the most amazing people we have ever met in our lives, so we can promise you this: there will not be a dull moment throughout the season.”
