Scott Weishaus can connect a Scarsdale alumnis name with the year of his or her high school graduation. Weishaus is not a Scarsdale High School teacher, coach or principalhes the owner of Gianonni's Deli on Garth Road.
Brian Shepard from the class of 2007 used to order a chicken cutlet with bacon and barbeque sauce on a baguette, said Weishaus. Years after Shepard left Scarsdale for college, the "Brian Bacon," is still wrapped in aluminum foil and served to patrons at Gianonni's. The "Brian Bacon" is not the only student inspired Giannoni's sandwich, Weishaus said most of the menu pays homage to former high school students.
"We are very popular with the high school crowd," said Weishaus, while looking at a framed collage of past high school students hanging on a wall. "It is a fun old fashioned place. It is a Cheers-like place, where everybody knows your name."
Weishaus opened his intimate deli in time for the Class of 1994 to grab sandwiches during their free periods or at lunch.
"A guy who graduated in '94 came in the other day," said Weishaus. "He is married with two kids and lives in the city. I still remember his order."
Weishaus' family had owned a food store in Hastings. When the family sold that store Weishaus was lost. That is, until he opened Giannoni's.
"We stumbled across this place. We thought it would be a great stop over place and we have been here for all these years," said Weishaus. "I fell in love with the neighborhood. I love the people. I love going to work every day."
