SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Officials in Scarsdale are reminding homeowners this month to "call before you dig."

The message is important, and shouldn't be overlooked -- particularly because April is National Safe Digging Month, officials said.

Scarsdale Fire Chief Thomas Cain urged anyone aiming to plant new trees and flowers to know what's going on beneath the surface, where cable wires, water and energy pipes and sewage pipes often are buried.

Cain said that utility lines are among the most dangerous and should be avoided whenever possible.

The chief said anyone wishing to know what pipes and wires run on their property should call 811.

”These incidents can lead to serious fires when natural gas, propane or power lines are involved," Cain said. "Take the time to call 811 and minimize the risk for all of us."

Anyone wanting to learn more should contact the Scarsdale Building Department at 914-722-1140 or 914-722-1215.
