Lawless, 12, has organized a “Save The Tiger” Fashion Event April 13 at The Center@862 for tween, teens and their moms to raise awareness about the tiger, which the World Wildlife Fund has classified as an endangered species. Tickets are $5 at the door and there will be raffles and door prizes. All proceeds will benefit Panthera, a conservation group working worldwide to save big cats like the tiger from extinction.
“There are actually more tigers in captivity today, in zoos or circuses, than there are in the wild,” said Lawless’s mom Lisa. “If you come to her fashion show you'll find out why.”
The event host, and Lawless’s aunt, Brenda Copper, is known for her work on television shows like Happily Divorced, The Nanny and E! Fashion Emergency: Extreme Makeover. The evening will feature a tiger-inspired fashion show and Cooper will offer fashion advice at the event.
“The fashion show is sort of the big event that's part of her Silver Award project, but she's already done a couple of things for her project in the middle and high school,” Lisa said.
Lawless is part of the Scarsdale Middle School Student Organization, similar to a student government, which held a raffle and handed out flyers about tigers and what you can do to help. She also got the high school Save Animals Club to do a fundraiser at an upcoming school carnival. She will also have a display about tigers at the Greenburgh Nature Center on April 27.
“It’s just been a great learning experience for her,” her mother said. “Not only does it get them to focus on something that they’re interested in that they want to improve in the world, but it is a tremendous learning experience for them. I'm watching her, right before my eyes, become a mature person and she's going to be even more capable when this project is finished.”
Two of the sponsors of Lawless’s event are Disney Friends for Change and Youth Service America.
The event is from 7 to 9 p.m. April 13 at The Center@862 on 862 Scarsdale Ave.
