Scarsdale Man's Death Attributed To Enlarged Heart

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – An autopsy indicates that an enlarged heart took the life of a Scarsdale resident who suddenly lost consciousness and died while playing in a basketball game Sunday night.

The Westchester County Medical Examiner’s office performed an autopsy Tuesday on the body of Peter Sauer and cited cardiomegaly – enlarged heart – as the cause of death. Sauer, 35, had a skull fracture that is believed to have occurred when he collapsed to the floor. The medical examiner will continue to examine microscopic slides for further information.

Sauer collapsed while playing basketball in a Gardella Park summer league. He was shooting free throws when he collapsed and fell backwards, hitting his head. He was treated on scene and taken to the White Plains Hospital Emergency Room, but couldn't be revived.

The Pittsburgh native played college basketball at Stanford University, making four-straight NCAA tournament appearances. He played in the Final Four in 1998.
