The scouts, sponsored by Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scarsdale since 1938, received the Ad Altare Dei emblem at a special ceremony held May 4 at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. Aidan Connolly, 13, of Yonkers; John Giantelli, 15, of New Rochelle; and Joseph Tesler, 14, of Eastchester, were among the recipients of the award, which was created in 1926 as a way of helping scouts develop spiritually, according to a press release.
"The religious medallion is awarded to Boy Scouts who are active Catholics, have received Catholic religious education, have worked on the religious emblem requirements, including providing service to those in need, and have been active members of their troop for at least six months," representatives said. "The participants are required to complete a six- to eight-month Ad Altare Dei (to the altar of God) program that provides instruction in the seven sacraments taught by the Catholic Church, ... baptism, the Eucharist, reconciliation, confirmation, marriage, holy orders and the anointing of the sick."
Troop Chair Ed Mann praised the scouts.
“These young men epitomize all that is good in scouting as they become intimate with their faith, learn how to assist those in need as well as know the meaning of the Boy Scout’s law,” Mann.
