Summer Fun in Scarsdale: Meander Miles Along River

SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Haruko Mellor and Arisa Kora, Scarsdale residents, walk and talk together every Monday along the wooded Scarsdale section of the Bronx River Pathway that curves with and bridges over the Bronx River.

"It is very nice," said Kora. "It is under the shade in the summertime."

Twins Emily and Livia Meneghin, recent graduates of Eastchester High School who live on Garth Road, also use The Bronx River Pathway regularly in the summer months. The sisters play soccer on the side of the pathway, ride their bikes up and down the hills towards Bronxville and walk to the waterfall in Scarsdale.

"For me I like just standing in the middle of the pathway and looking up at all the trees," said Emily Meneghin. "It is a little escape."

The Bronx River Pathway consists of three paved segments in The Bronx River Parkway Reservation -- an 807-acre linear park opened in 1925. One paved section is a one-mile loop near Oak Street in Mount Vernon. Another pathway is 3.6-miles from Palmer Road in Bronxville north to Harney Road in Scarsdale and a 5-mile path extending from Greenacres Avenue in Hartsdale to Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla is the third paved section, according to the Westchester Parks website.

Mellor, Kora and the Meneghins use the path for recreational activities but this pathway is also a haven for history buffs.

A 26-stop audio tour narrated by former CBS News anchor Dan Rather is available by calling (914) 517-5575 from a cell phone. This audio tour provides an "Overview of the 9.6-mile Bronx River Walk. It is a world of wonders, sights, and sounds, history, architecture and man-made marvels in a lovely natural setting," says Rather at the beginning of the Scarsdale section of the tour.

The park is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to dusk year-round. For more information call (914) 328-1542.
