The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued an alert shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, stating that there was a discharge emanating from a manhole in a nearby stream bed at 1500 Central Park Avenue in Yonkers.

According to officials, the sewage discharge began at 11 a.m., lasting more than five hours at an estimated rate of 10 gallons per minute. In an effort to contain the discharge, members of the DEC used a high-pressure flusher truck hose that was sent upstream into the manhole to relieve the backup.

The discharge has since been contained, and no local parks were affected.
