Armonk Chamber Honors Susan Geffen As Citizen Of The Year

ARMONK, N.Y. -- When thinking of a person who volunteers, in Armonk there's one name that stands out above the rest -- Susan Geffen.

Whether it's working with the library or marching in a parade or donating countless hours to different organizations throughout town, Geffen is one busy woman working to make Armonk a better place to live.

So it's easy to see why she was honored Monday as the 2016 Armonk Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

After raising her family in Armonk, Geffen's involvement in the town's betterment began in earnest in the early 1990s when she lent her interior design expertise to the library’s new Whippoorwill Hall, as well as its children’s room. Soon after, she joined the Friends of North Castle Public Library Inc. board.

When Whippoorwill Hall was completed in the early ‘90s, Geffen quickly put the new theater to good use, co-producing with Ed Woodyard, a holiday concert that grew to include the downtown Winter Walk, gazebo tree lighting and Frosty Day, when Geffen can be seen waving from her VW Beetle along the parade route.

Her involvement with the library grew when she became president of the Friends of the Library Board, which she held for two nonconcurrent terms, being the Friends’ longest-serving president. She continues to serve on the board and still works on the library’s design projects.

Geffen plays a major role in the Armonk Outdoor Art Show.

The town’s Architectural Review Board has benefited from Geffen's involvement during her three terms, as has the Residential Projects Review Committee, since its inception and, most recently, the Landmarks Preservation Committee, where she demonstrates her dedication to preserving the values and traditions that have long symbolized Armonk and inspired its residents.

For the last two years, Geffen has happily dressed in costume to make butter at the North Castle Historical Society for the school’s Colonial Craft days. And, taking it back home to her neighborhood, Geffen serves as president of the Whippoorwill Association.
