Norwalk Commuters Encouraged To Bike To Work This Week

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- As the Connecticut Department of Transportation challenges commuters this week to try alternative travel methods for their daily commutes, bike fans in Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich have a good option for Friday.

For at least one day during CTrides Week from May 13 through May 17, drivers are asked to visit www.CTrides.com and pledge to take advantage of various ride-sharing options instead of driving alone.   

On “Bike to Work Day,” commuters are encouraged to enjoy a green trip to work. As a reward, bicycle commuters can stop by events in Fairfield, Norwalk and Stamford for free refreshments and giveaways.

The Norwalk Bike to Work event will take place Friday from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the South Norwalk rail station on the New Haven side. The event is supported by SWRPA, the city of Norwalk, the Norwalk Parking Authority, the Norwalk Redevelopment Agency and CTRides.

The Stamford Bike to Work event will take place on Friday from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in Veterans Park at Atlantic and Main streets. The event is supported by SWRPA, the city of Stamford, Danny’s Cycles and CTRides.

The Fairfield Bike to Work takes place Friday from 7 to 9 a.m. at the Chef's Table, 1561 Post Road.  Free coffee, tea, fruit and pastries for all who arrive by bike or on foot. Free bike tuning station will be available courtesy of Zane's of Fairfield.  

Since 2000, the number of bicycle commuters has increased 40 percent nationally and 50 percent in Connecticut, according to the 2010 Census. For a full list of events,check out Bike Walk Connecticut’s website.

“In the end, we all benefit from fewer solitary drivers on Connecticut’s roadways,” said Transportation Commissioner James Redeker  “I encourage all residents to consider participating in CTrides Week and experience the advantages of a greener commute.”

CTrides is a program of the Connecticut Department of Transportation designed to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by providing information and services for alternatives to driving alone.
