TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – An assessment of the Indian Point nuclear power plant showed it operated safely during 2011, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently announced.
“Throughout 2011, our inspectors kept close watch on safety performance at all 104 commercial power reactors operating in the United States. Indian Point Units 2 and 3 were among those that met our clearly defined performance criteria last year,” said NRC Region I Administrator Bill Dean. “In addition, our inspectors spent time in 2011 verifying that there were no immediate safety concerns at U.S. nuclear power plants following the March events at the Fukushima Daiichi facility in Japan. Those reviews indicated the plants remained safe for continued operation.”
A meeting to discuss the annual assessment of safety performance for 2011 will take place May 17 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Tarrytown. An open house will begin at 6 p.m., when the public can talk with plant inspectors and managers one-on-one. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public question-and-answer session from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Indian Point facility is operated by Entergy Nuclear Operations within the Village of Buchanan. Two pressurized-water reactors are in operation.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said an end-of-year assessment showed there were no performance indicators for the two reactors other than “Green,” which is defined as “very low risk.” The commission said there were no inspections that were greater than “Green.”
The annual assessment does not include security information, which is relayed separately.
In a letter to site manager John Ventosa, Chief of the Division of Reactor Projects Mel Gray said the commission determined “that overall, Indian Point Units 2 and 3 operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and met all cornerstone objectives.”
