Hastings, Dobbs Ferry Score High in Walkability

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – With gas prices still north of $4 per gallon and the warm weather officially here, many local residents are looking to take advantage of the high walkability scores in Dobbs Ferry and Hastings.

“It’s one square mile so here the towns are kind of centered,” said Michelle Hartnett, who grew up in Dobbs Ferry.  “You can just get up and go, rather than dealing with a car.”

On the website WalkScore.com Dobbs Ferry received a rating of 89 out of 100, which is defined as very walkable.  Hastings scored even higher with a rating of 91 out of 100, which is defined as a walker’s paradise by the site.  Ardsley scored 72 out of 100, but is still defined as very walkable.

Some residents were impressed with the rating in the village, but far from surprised.

“It’s one of my favorite things about the village,” said Dobbs Ferry resident Patty Hartnett.  “We walk everywhere.”

With so many restaurants and attractions available in close proximity in downtown Dobbs Ferry and Hastings, walking is a first choice of some when possible.

“We will take a walk into town for dinner and it’s an adventure,” said Patty Hartnett.  “It’s about getting fresh air and I think the kids do benefit.”

Cheryl Mitchell, who works in Hastings and lives in Dobbs Ferry, said walkability is one of the biggest draws of the area.

“For what I do, it’s pretty good – it’s easy to get around,” she said.  “The kids definitely benefit from it.”
