FEMA Registration Deadline Extended

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The deadline to file for federal assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been extended to Jan. 28 for residents and business owners who incurred damages from Hurricane Sandy.

The deadline to file was Dec. 31, but FEMA agreed to extend it to give more time to those impacted by the storm.

Individuals and families may be eligible for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. Low-interest loans for repair or replacement of real estate or personal property also are available to individuals, as well as nonprofits and businesses of any size through the Small Business Administration. Applicants have six months after approval to accept the loan.

A Disaster Recovery Center remains open at the Westchester County Center on 198 Central Ave. until Dec. 21. It is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

“I encourage any homeowner, renter or business owner who suffered damages and losses as a result of Hurricane Sandy to register with FEMA and seek assistance,” County Executive Robert Astorino said. “The new filing deadline means that people will now be able to do so beyond the end of the year.”

Nearly 5,200 Westchester residents have registered with FEMA since Hurricane Sandy.
