Guess What Putnam Valley HS Students Are Reading? A Newspaper

PUTNAM VALLEY, N.Y. -- At Putnam Valley High School, the death of print media has been greatly exaggerated.

The school's newspaper, The Tiger's Den, has proven to be a big hit with teachers, students and administrators.

The paper, now published once every two months, was previously online, but received little traction until students began printing copies and passing them around the school.

"People are starting to pay attention," said Editor-in-Chief Jadyn Marshall, a junior, who heads a staff of ten reporters.

Articles have run the gamut from the usual school issues (i.e. students having too much homework and not enough sleep) to more serious subjects like having a bathroom for transgender students and how Common Core is impacting education.

The paper has also helped dispel rumors about possible changes in the administration, stories which have proved to be quite popular.

"If we hear any rumors about anything in the administration, we can address it right away," said Marshall.

Another popular article was on a student who began selling french fries in protest of the school ending French Fry Fridays due to new nutritional guidelines.

The big topic now: Tracking down who the school mascot is.

"I'm really happy with how things are going," said Marshall. "I think we are starting to find our voice. We're trying to find a mix and write stories people want to read about."

Reporters for the newspaper said they are pleased students are reading it and that parents have also become fans. "They are not just throwing it on the ground," said Marshall.

While the reporters don't know if they want to pursue a career in journalism, they said writing for the paper has been a positive experience.

"It's great opportunity to practice my writing and get feedback," said Olivia Schmidt, a freshman.

Bill Scampoli, the faculty adviser, said the students have done an outstanding job and he appreciates how supportive the staff and administration have been.

"It is beyond my expectations," said Scampoli. "It has been extremely successful. Jadyn is an outstanding editor."
